Transforming dental emergencies to dental health
Dr. Karleen Trefil
A native of the western suburbs of Chicago, Dr Trefil’s passion for dentistry ignited when she began assisting her father at his dental office, and later assisting other dentists in the Chicago area.
It did not take long for Karleen to see why her father loved practicing dentistry. One of the benefits of being a dentist is becoming part of a specialized team whose clear objective is to improve patients’ dental health.
Whether the goal is to alleviate pain, ease a nervous patient, or help a patient love their smile, Dr T finds all aspects of dentistry fascinating and unique. Her day at the office is never dull.
Dr Trefil graduated with her BS in Health Science from Benedictine University, Lisle, IL, and in 2007, she obtained her DMD from Southern Illinois University
School of Dental Medicine in Alton, IL.
Upon graduating dental school, she relocated to Colorado and became a partner in a practice in Pueblo. After two years, she had the opportunity to move to the KCMO area and became partners with a former dental school classmate, for eight years. Later, she worked at a pediatric dental office and had hospital privileges at Truman Lakewood in Kansas City.
Val, Office Manager
I was born in Kansas City, while most of my childhood was spent in Salina, KS. After my freshman year of college, I returned back to KC and for this country girl, I found Kansas City to be a different, yet exciting world. I landed my first job in dentistry at age 23 and never looked back. I thrived as a dental assistant for 20 years and then transitioned into the role of Treatment & Finance Coordinator and then Office Manager in different offices. As the Office Manager of Dental ER, I am incredibly fortunate to have such an exemplary team with which to work.
Over the years, I have had the pleasure of serving as a volunteer for Doctors With a Heart, and as an instructor within the dental assisting program at Concorde Career College. There, I became a CPR instructor and earned my Certificate in Dental Assisting (CDA) and continued my college education via online courses at night.
When I’m not making magic happen at Dental ER, I enjoy spending time with my four daughters, grandkids, and my fiancé. I love to attend live music events around town, see comedy shows, movies, enjoy cooking, and riding my Harley Davidson Fatboy. I look forward to meeting you in our welcoming office!
Brittney, Dental Assistant
I was born and raised in Marshall, MO and in 2012, I moved to Independence where I still reside with my son, Liam and my dog, Athena. In 2013, I started in the dental field, attending Summit Dental Assisting Academy where I earned my certificate as a dental assistant. I went on to take my Missouri Basic Skills test through the Missouri Dental Board in 2014. With a desire to continue learning and advancing my skills as an assistant, I obtained my EFDA certificate in Restorative 1 and Fixed Prosthetics at Ozarks Technical Community College in Springfield, MO. I also obtained my certification in the monitoring of Nitrous Oxide-Oxygen Analgesia and in Deep Sedation/General Anesthesia.
I’ve always had a passion for helping others and have worked in health care since I was 16. I was drawn to the dental field because it is a career where I’m able to take an active role in helping others as well as have an impact on their oral health. I am excited to be part of the Dental ER team. The welcoming environment makes you feel like you are part of a family. It’s exciting to be a part of a great team, who values their patients as much as we do.
In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my son, taking our dog on walks, playing outdoors and watching movies. I also enjoy taking trips back to my hometown to visit my family and friends.
